Grief Read

  • The Lantern 2828 Southeast Stephens Street Portland, Oregon, 97214 United States (map)

Grief read offers a gentle structure for those who want to be near grief without being asked to speak directly about their own. Together, we gather once a month to read — memoir, poetry, theory, cultural studies, essays, or any text that explores grief and loss.

Participants are welcome to bring a book they’re already reading, or to browse a small selection of grief-related books provided for use during the gathering (at this time, books will not be available to take home, but you’re welcome to use the space to explore what you may want to purchase or borrow from your library later). This is not a focused discussion group where everyone reads the same text. Instead, we create quiet collective study — time set aside to think, reflect, take note, sit, and be in the company of others doing the same. We’ll close with optional space to share a line, idea, or reflection that felt meaningful, though sharing is never required.

Grief study may be supportive for those navigating active grief, death doulas in training, grief- and death-curious folks, or anyone who wants structured proximity to grief without the intensity of a processing group.

Admission is Free (with donation up to $10.)

What to expect:

  • Brief introductions and a short opening grounding or quote.

  • 60–75 minutes of silent reading time.

  • Optional closing shares (a line, a thought, or simply “pass”).

  • No pressure to discuss personal grief experiences.

  • A calm, lightly facilitated space.

  • Gentle, quiet music (no lyrics), please bring ear plugs or sound canceling headphones if you need them.

  • A mix of memoir, poetry, and non-fiction texts available to browse.

  • You’re welcome to arrive late or leave early as needed seating will be available, and you’re encouraged to move, stretch, or step outside if helpful.
